Advanced Technology

Modern Micro Endodontics employs many forms of advanced dental technology in New Jersey. Please contact us at one of our five locations to schedule an appointment.

What is Dental Technology?

Dental technology refers to the advanced techniques, tools, and equipment that help practitioners provide improved patient care. Digital imaging, electronic tools, and other innovations help endodontists protect their patients’ oral health.

Benefits of Technology in Endodontics

Safety

High-tech dental equipment enhances patient safety by providing more complete treatment information. For example, a CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) scan reveals a patient’s nerve anatomy before a root canal procedure, helping to avoid possible complications.

Accuracy

Technology like electronic apex locators helps endodontists accurately measure the length of the root system, ensuring that they reach the tip when performing a root canal. Cleaning the entire root makes the possibility of root canal retreatment and apicoectomy less likely.

Speed

Innovations in technology make procedures faster by providing real-time information.

New Insights

Digital imaging provides insights into a patient’s oral health, allowing endodontists to see problems like abscesses and root fractures without invasive procedures.

Forms of Technology We Provide

Dental Microscope

We perform every procedure with the aid of a dental microscope. Using a microscope, we can accurately diagnose and treat the complex anatomy inside the tooth and root system.

EdgePRO Laser

This dental laser cleans and debrides the pulp chamber and root canals, effectively killing 99 percent of bacteria. We have recently purchased these devices for each of our offices. The EdgePRO system allows for quick, gentle treatment and helps to prevent future infections.

CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography)

A CBCT scanner is a sophisticated machine that produces a high-quality 3-D scan of the patient’s targeted area of question. These images include hard and soft tissues of the mouth in incredible detail. At Modern Micro Endodontics, we have a CBCT scanner at every location. The CBCT scanner can spot instances of root fracture and help the endodontist determine whether a patient is a good candidate for a root canal or whether the tooth needs extraction. Additionally, CBCT imaging aids in diagnosing as well as in treatment of complex canals systems. CBCT scanners can also catch undiagnosed diseases.

Digital Radiography (X-Rays)

Endodontists use standard digital radiography as well as the CBCT scanner. Digital radiography uses a fraction of the radiation used by standard film X-rays. The images gained are sharp and clear, helping the endodontist understand oral anatomy and make treatment decisions.

Apex Locator

An electronic apex locator is a small machine that measures the length of the root, enhancing the accuracy of a root canal procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions About Technology in Dentistry

How does the CBCT or cone beam scanner work?
The CBCT scanner works by producing a cone-shaped X-ray beam. The technician stabilizes the patient's head in the machine. The beam rotates around the patient's head 360 degrees. The machine captures single images at intervals. A sophisticated algorithm stitches these single images into a 3-D image.
Are cone beam scans safe?
Cone beam scans are safe when used correctly. They use more radiation than a standard digital X-ray but less than a traditional CT scanner.
When might a cone beam scan be necessary?
CBCT scans provide highly accurate and detailed images of your soft tissue, nerves, and bones. They can measure the shape of your jaw, detect gum problems, detect lesions, find problems that cause pain, and study the structure of the nasal cavity and sinuses.
Can a cone beam scan determine whether or not I need a root canal?
CBCT scans can detect the need for a root canal more accurately than radiography alone.
Why are digital radiographs better than standard X-rays?
Digital radiographs have many advantages over the film X-rays of the past. These include image detail, shareability, and lower radiation exposure.
How does the apex locator work?
The apex locator uses an electrical circuit that travels through the root canal and oral soft tissues to find the point where the root canal ends.
How does technology make endodontic procedures more comfortable?
With advanced technology, procedures can be more precise. Precision treatment means the procedure is faster and gentler, with fewer complications.
Can endodontic technology prevent the need for retreatment or surgery?
While root canals occasionally fail even with advanced equipment, technology does improve the chance of a trouble-free procedure.
