Facial Esthetics in New Jersey

What Is Facial Esthetics?

After a root canal, a prepared tooth may exhibit discoloration. Endodontic facial esthetics treatment involves internal bleaching to clear this discoloration and restore the tooth's attractive appearance.

Benefits of Facial Esthetics

  • Improves Tooth Appearance
Many patients feel uncomfortable with their smiles after receiving a root canal. A gray or black discolored tooth significantly affects their self-esteem and pride in their appearance.
  • Non-Invasive
The internal tooth bleaching process is quick and straightforward. Since the tooth has already had a root canal, patients do not need local anesthesia.
  • Economical
Internal bleaching costs less than half as much as a crown. If cost is a factor, internal bleaching may be the best way to correct a discolored tooth after a root canal.
  • Provides Long-Lasting Results
Internal bleaching lasts considerably longer than external teeth whitening, up to five to seven years.

Internal Bleaching

While traditional tooth whitening uses a peroxide bleach compound to brighten teeth from the outside, internal bleaching involves placing the bleaching agent inside the tooth. This treatment is only available if the tooth has undergone a root canal.

The internal bleaching process is comfortable and non-invasive. The endodontist drills a small hole in the back of the tooth and removes debris. The doctor places bleach crystals inside the tooth and applies a temporary filling. The bleaching process generally takes about one to two weeks, with the patient returning to have the crystals removed and the tooth permanently filled.  This procedure may be repeated until the desired result is achieved.

Occasionally, internal bleaching does not remove all traces of staining. In this case, the endodontist may recommend visiting your restorative dentist for a new crown that matches the surrounding teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions About Facial Esthetics

How long does internal tooth bleaching take?
Placing the bleach crystals takes only about half an hour. You may need to wait a few days for the bleach to take effect and produce the desired whitening results.
How long does internal bleaching last?
Internal bleaching lasts about five to seven years.
How many times can my endodontist repeat the process?
You can receive internal bleaching treatment multiple times.
Does internal bleaching work on non-viable teeth?
Yes, the procedure does work on these teeth.
Which is more economical: internal tooth bleaching or a new crown?
The cost of internal tooth bleaching is considerably lower than that of a crown. It is an economical alternative to a full tooth restoration.
Can I eat and drink normally while the bleach crystals are in my tooth?
Since your tooth has already received a root canal, you will not experience any discomfort when eating or drinking. Be cautious with sticky or chewy foods near your temporary filling.
How does peroxide work in teeth whitening?
Peroxide solutions penetrate the tooth from the inside and physically break up stains in the dentin. Over time, the peroxide crystals dramatically improve the tooth's appearance.
Are there any drawbacks to internal tooth bleaching?
Internal bleaching is not a long-term solution for a discolored tooth. The procedure will need to happen every five to seven years. Researchers have also associated internal tooth bleaching with a higher risk of external root resorption, but this side effect is uncommon.
